The Blinded Step
The Blinded Step
Yahya Al- Semawy
Translated by: Sozan Sami Jamil
I Hide passion in my blood
Eyeballs expose its secret
…………………………..
Bright... But rummy
by a glass; its wine is tedious
his two drinking companions are: the slaughtered tomorrow
since two eons and maladies
He is patient, but haste
crowds the days’ steps
He Walks strolled to above fifties
Tendency in his hilt
His green iris mollified
flames did not beat in it
His partner at night bed
was insomnia that doesn’t depart
and, a desolated rainy maze escorts him,
if he woke up
He entertains, delusional, his tomorrow
and his day’s presence is debris
A promise, its honesty is disheartening,
supports his love cave
That tomorrow his "Samawa"(1)
will celebrate the link’s wedding
which tomorrow,
and the tie of death threw apparel on it?
His awakening homes are pits
and his dream’s halo is Saturn!
He hastens the walk to Iraq
since an eon but does not arrive!
And does not have to loved ones
as messengers, but his tears!
and sentences that mourn
sails of words’ revelation
The Blinded Step wherever he went
ways tightened their eyelids
Is he insane? Or his longings
have dementia in their gnat?
Sadness’s arch his back
not years and fatigue
in cameleer and not in camels are:
flaw and fault
and in pedestrian not in road
or its suns is the defect
A pleasure, could be grief
Cordiality could be quackery
indolence could be vitality
and swiftness could be indolence!
The one who planted knife, could be a loser
And the one who murdered by it, could be a Hero
does a tender skin youth approach me
while eon be middle aged?
When I Stand, boredom is my female camel
When I sit, sorrow is my male camel
I am thirsty, but rivers escapes
from my herbs and deadly fight!
A mountain of rock of weariness sees me off,
before the death
I am knocked down for my yarns
and age is a shame of its days!
I temporize my tears patiently
my excuse is: I am a man
I cadge her endurance
to bid farewell to who arrived
I hide passion in my blood
eyeballs expose its secret!
I "Alksai" What is my excuse (2)
and tricks had been narrowed for me?
I’ll fold affluence tent
so age could be stenograph
what is my life for, if homeland
jailed by cave oppression?
Starve Overthrew its field
and "Hubble" bled its rituals!
Goodbye my loved ones
your abstinence is parable
I pledge you and God's light
no matter how long it took me
I sew the eyelids around you
when cilium descends
Oh pure sand homeland
bathes by prays
Hope rains didn’t depart
your valley
grief and fear wind
not passed on your people
your night is shiny in my eyeball
and your Sab bitterness is honey (3)
I wish I get paralyzed
before I walk away from you!

(1) Samawa: is a city in the south of Iraq where the poet born and grew up.
(2) Alkusaee: is a man of kusaa tribe; his real name was: Ghamed ibn al-Harith; he made a bow and five arrows and hid in the way of a flock of zebras; He shot one of them by his arrow. It went through the zebra’s body and hit the mountain. Seeing a sparkling caused by that arrow, made him think that he missed it, he tried twice and three times until he finished all arrows. Because arrows kept hitting the mountain and causing sparkling, he broke his bow. He slept there at night. In the morning, he discovered that he did not miss any of zebras and all arrows were covered by blood. He regret breaking the bow so, he cut his thumb as a type of punishment.
(3) Sab: is a tree that has a very bitter juice; if it goes into the eye, it will damage it.
